Every day there seems to be a report of yet another volcanic eruption, leading many people (and the media) to think that volcanic activity around the world is increasing.
It is true that more volcanoes might erupt in one year compared to another, and some years happen to experience more significantly large eruptions than others. However, this does not mean that volcanic activity is any more excessive today than it was 1000, 10,000 or 1 million years ago.
As technology and media coverage increases year upon year the chances of hearing about volcanic eruptions around the globe increases. Our increased exposure to the worlds volcanism is responsible for our thinking that more volcanoes are erupting than ever before – which they aren’t.
